General Overview
Forty years ago, Gordon Moore of Intel Corporation observed that the number of transistors on a silicon chip was doubling every year. In what became known as Moore’s Law, it was predicted that the number of transistors on a chip would continue to double at regular intervals for the foreseeable future.
This is the first in a series of blogs in which I and my good friend Dan Picker, CTO of Purewave Networks, will discuss the needs, challenges and huge potential advantages of what is gearing up to be a revolutionary new approach to the design and deployment of broadband cellular networks. These so-called “Small Cell” networks have the potential to scale much higher data usage per user than could practically be achieved with existing cellular networks or traditional approaches to network infrastructure build-outs.
In the last section of IPv6, my focus shifts to what Tier 1 carriers need to do in order to prepare for this massive transformation, along with the complexity of how one can transform and eliminate what I refer to as ‘migraine headaches’ of moving from IPv4 to IPv6. I will also focus on the potential impacts of the platform across the industry.
